Anxiety
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is something that we all have likely experienced at some point in our lives. It can range from a mild feeling of nervousness to overwhelming fear, restlessness, and dread. It is an emotional response you may experience in response to a perceived threat or danger, even when the danger is not a threat or you may be suddenly overwhelmed for no specific reason. Anxiety can be triggered by stress, worry, or fear and it can be very difficult to cope with.
It is completely normal to feel anxious in certain scenarios, such as moments when you are being challenged or feel like you are being judged.
However, some of us experience anxiety often and feel overwhelmed in a wide array of situations, resulting in feelings of distress and dread even when we don't know what we are actually worrying about or why. Having persistent anxiety can negatively impact overall wellbeing and our day to day satisfaction with life. It can seep into all corners of our lived experience and prevent us from feeling connection, enjoyment, and peace.
How can counselling help?
If you're feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, you're not alone…
Therapy can be a powerful tool to help you navigate it. Anxiety can make us feel like we don’t have any control over our thoughts or emotions. Therapy can help you regain a sense of control and empower you to take on the challenges of life. An important part of therapy is learning how to challenge patterns of negative thinking and respond to yourself in a compassionate way. You can also explore strategies such as relaxation techniques, deep breathing, physical activity and meditation, so you can manage your feelings of anxiety more effectively.
Through carefully guided conversations with a counsellor…
You can identify triggers for the anxiety you feel, learn how to cope with the feelings associated with it, and develop skills and strategies to proactively prevent future episodes. This can include addressing underlying thoughts, emotions, and patterns of behavior that may contribute to the anxiety. In addition, counsellors often draw from different therapeutic approaches in order to help you find balance and reduce intense reactions to stressors. By addressing the underlying causes of anxiety through therapy, you will be better equipped to cope with tough times or high-stress situations, you will also be more equipped to connect to greater peace, and fulfillment in your life.
