Depression
What is depression?
Chances are you or someone you know has experienced depression at some point in life. The experience of depression can feel like you are caught in a vortex of negativity and despair. Depression is more than just feeling sadness, it can include a host of other symptoms that affect us mentally and physically. This can include a feeling of hopelessness, a lack of concentration and energy, restlessness and irritability, a decrease in interest in activities you used to enjoy and even physical pain or digestive problems. It can become difficult to be motivated, to be engaged with life, to feel a sense of meaning and purpose. Depression can really feel unbearable and some cases it can lead to suicidal thoughts. Understandably, these symptoms can significantly affect the most basic and necessary daily activities: sleeping, eating, working and socializing.
Depression can be difficult to manage, and you're not alone. It affects everybody differently, and can have a huge impact on our lives if left unaddressed.
Psychological challenges such as depression often have multiple causes. These might include the culture and current times we live in, past traumas experienced, genetics, physical illness, the environment you were raised in, medications we may be taking and even day-to-day stressors can all trigger symptoms of depression. Similarly, many everyday life experiences that we encounter-- such as adjusting to a new job or experiencing a loss in the family could also bring about feelings of loss, overwhelm, sadness, and low self-esteem which can play into feelings of depression. You do not have to suffer alone. If you think you may be experiencing depression, reaching out to get support and connecting about it is important. Together, we can work on ways to shift patterns that cause or worsen your pain and access inner resources so that you can feel empowered again.
