Autism

What is autism?

If you or your child have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), we see you, your gifts and your challenges. ASD is a psychological condition that can involve difficulties with communicating and interacting with other people. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to the symptoms of Autism. In addition to difficulty understanding social cues and emotions which can make interacting with others more difficult, you may also experience challenges with repetitive behaviors, restricted interests, sensory issues or a combination of these. Some people with ASD may have difficulty sleeping, are sensitive to loud noises or certain textures, and struggle with organization. Autism can present itself in different forms, depending on the person, making it an incredibly diverse condition that affects each individual differently. Its effects range from mild to severe, some people experience only some mild elements of ASD, and others are more profoundly impacted by its presence.

Autism is a complex and often misunderstood condition, and its causes are a topic of debate.

From genetics to environmental factors, experts have identified a number of possible contributors to autism’s development. It is thought that genetics play an important role with certain gene mutations or variations that can create an increased likelihood for developing the condition. Other theories include environmental factors such as exposure to toxins, medications, or viruses in utero that may increase the risk of autism as well. Premature birth has also been proposed as a potential cause. Collectively, research continues to build a better understanding of the underlying causes of Autism. However you may be affected by ASD, know that you are not alone, we are here to support you.

How can counselling help?

Counselling for autism is tailored to your individual needs.

We'll talk about what you've been struggling with, as well as your personal history and goals. Working with a therapist can help you develop coping strategies, problem-solve challenging situations, set healthy boundaries and become an advocate for yourself. Counselling can also help you better understand emotions, communicate more effectively, recognize any misunderstandings stemming from ASD, and support you to develop lasting relationships. We may also spend time exploring any co-existing psychological conditions you might struggle with in the context of ASD such as anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Through our sessions, we will work to reclaim a sense of ease and autonomy in parts of your life that may feel overwhelming or out of control.

Counselling for children with ASD is tailored to the unique needs of your child.

Therapy includes strategies such as art and play therapy to support building emotional awareness and regulation, setting healthy boundaries, and navigating relationships. We help give your child tools to move forward in life with greater ease and fulfillment. We accept autism funding should your child or teen have this support.
