ADHD
What is ADHD?
If you are struggling with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), you are not alone! ADHD is a common psychological condition that is characterized by an inability to concentrate and manage impulses, leading to hyperactivity and restlessness. No matter what your age, symptoms such as difficulty with following instructions, focusing, organizational skills, self-control, and impulsiveness can be hard to manage and can significantly affect our relationships with others and ourselves. Folks with ADHD may struggle with tasks such as finishing long tasks and following directions that require sustained effort. When we try to navigate these symptoms on our own, these challenges can lead to feelings of shame, frustration, depression, and low self-esteem.
You may be wondering what the causes of ADHD are.
Well, it turns out there is no single clear-cut cause; rather, research points to the cause being a complex mix of factors such as genetics, brain development and structure, as well as environmental and cultural influences. For instance, trauma has been linked to an increased risk of developing ADHD and different cultural and environmental influences can also play a role in individual cases. Our early childhood experiences, attachment bonds, and daily routines may be connected to ADHD symptoms, and these environmental influences all exist within cultural norms. For example, the manic pace of our current culture and its inflated values of productivity and progress can feed into frenetic daily routines and high pressures within families and support systems.
No matter where you are in your journey with ADHD, you don't have to face it alone, we are here for you.
How can counselling help?
Counselling can be a great way to help you understand your ADHD symptoms and connect with tools and strategies to manage them.
Working with a therapist, you can develop strategies that work for you specifically, like how to better control impulsive behavior or ways to help stick to routines. You can also gain insight into the root causes of your symptoms, work through any past trauma that may be contributing to your symptoms and learn how to decipher what your symptoms, as messengers, may be needing from you.
Therapy provides you with a safe space to talk…
About the challenges you are currently facing and to look back at past experiences and how they may have shaped you in order to better understand your lived experience. Counselling can help navigate the complexities of managing ADHD so that you can embark on living life to its fullest potential.
